Overview

• Infection that occurs in the incision created by an invasive surgical procedure
• May occur following a breach in tissue surfaces and allow normal commensals and other pathogens to initiate infection
• Major cause of morbidity and mortality
• Make up 20% of all healthcare-associated infections and at least 5% of patients undergoing surgery will develop an SSI as a result
• In many cases, the organism is derived from the patients own body

Making Diagnosis

Clinical Features:

• Spreading Erythema
• Localised Pain
• Pus or Discharge from the wound
• Pyrexia
