Overview
- Infection that occurs in the incision created by an invasive surgical procedure
- May occur following a breach in tissue surfaces and allow normal commensals and other pathogens to initiate infection
- Major cause of morbidity and mortality
- Make up 20% of all healthcare-associated infections and at least 5% of patients undergoing surgery will develop an SSI as a result
- In many cases, the organism is derived from the patients own body

Making Diagnosis
Clinical Features:
- Spreading Erythema
- Localised Pain
- Pus or Discharge from the wound
- Pyrexia
