Overview

• Commenst cause of death in first year of life. Most common at 3 months of age.
• Major Risk Factors → putting baby to sleep prone, parental smoking, prematurity, bed sharing, hyperthermia.
• Protective Factors → breastfeeding, room sharing, use of dummies.

• Prevention ⇒
  • Infants should be put to sleep on their back.
    • Can cause flattened occiput (plagiocephaly).
  • Avoid overheating.
  • Place ‘feet to foot’ position.
  • No smoking exposure.
  • Baby in parents’ bedroom for first 6 months.
  • Baby not in parents’ bed when they are tired or have drank alcohol.
  • Ideally should be breastfed.
