Overview
- Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to an infection
- Suspect sepsis based on acute deterioration in patient in whom there is evidence of infection
- Risk Factors → age >65 yrs, immunocompromise, recent surgery, haemodialysis, diabetes, IV drug misuse, breached skin integrity
Making Diagnosis
Clinical Features:
- Signs associated with specific source of infection → eg. cough, dysuria, abdo pain
- NEWS2 ≥5 → indicates sepsis
- Tachypnoea (20/min)
- High (>38) or Low (<36) Temperature
- Tachycardia
- Altered Mental Status
- Low Oxygen Saturation
- Hypotension
- Oliguria
