Overview
- BMI >30kg/m2.
- Aetiology ⇒
- Pre-Existing Obesity → poor diet, lack of exercise.
- Fluid Retention → polyhydramnios, heart/kidney/liver failure.
Making Diagnosis
Clinical Features
- Associated Conditions → GDM, pre-eclampsia, infections.
Investigations
- BMI Monitoring → measured at every antenatal appointment.
- Bloods → FBC, LFT, U&Es, cholesterol, OGTT.
- USS → foetal growth scans.
Management Plan
- Conservative → exercise, diet, vitamin D supplementation.
- Labour Planning → assess risk of giving birth via vaginal delivery and whether there needs to be induction or CS.
- Post-Natal Follow Up → T2DM testing.
Complications → GDM, pre-eclampsia, infections, overdue pregnancy, labour difficulties, CS, miscarriage.
