(GP) (Infection)
Overview
- Highly contagious disease caused by the influenza viruses A, B, and C (very rare)
- Most infections occur during winter season
- Influenza Virus A and B → RNA virus of the family orthomyxoviruses spread via person-to-person transmission directly via respiratory droplets or indirectly through contact with contaminated surfaces
- Influenza A → classified into various subtypes based on glycoproteins of viral envolope - haemaglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N)
- Hygeine precautions and vaccination help prevent spread of the influenza viruses
- Characterised by upper and lower respiratory tract symptoms
Making Diagnosis
Clinical Features:
- Fever
- Acute Bronchitis → cough
- Headache
- Arthralgia
- Myalgia
- Fatigue & Malaise
