Overview

• Abnormal growth of tissue which projects from a mucous membrane.

• Risk Factors → obestity, hypertension, HRT or Tamoxifen (increases oestrogen levels in post-menopausal women).

• Common in women 40-50 years old (when oestrogen levels are high).

  

• Cervical Ectropion → ectocervical migration of columnar epithelium.

  • Linked to oestrogen (pregnancy, COCP).
  • Sx → IMB, PCB, increased discharge.
  • Ix → speculum.
  • Mx → reassurance, cauterisation, cryotherapy.

Making Diagnosis

Clinical Features

• Cervical Polyp → contact bleeding (ie. post-coital bleeding).
• Endometrial Polyp → usually asymptomatic. Irregular menstrual bleeding, inter-menstrual bleeding, vaginal discharge, infertility.

Investigations

• Cervical Polyp → speculum.
• Endometrial Polyp → transvaginal ultrasound.

Management Plan

• Cervical Polyp → reassurance, send for histology.
• Endometrial Polyp → polypectomy.
